Ebook About The riveting, mega-bestselling, beloved and highly acclaimed memoir of a man, a vocation, and an era named one of the ten best nonfiction titles of the year by Time and Entertainment Weekly. In the mid-seventies, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. This book is, in his own words, the story of “why I did stand-up and why I walked away.” Emmy and Grammy Award–winner, author of the acclaimed New York Times bestsellers Shopgirl and The Pleasure of My Company, and a regular contributor to The New Yorker, Martin has always been a writer. His memoir of his years in stand-up is candid, spectacularly amusing, and beautifully written. At age ten Martin started his career at Disneyland, selling guidebooks in the newly opened theme park. In the decade that followed, he worked in the Disney magic shop and the Bird Cage Theatre at Knott’s Berry Farm, performing his first magic/comedy act a dozen times a week. The story of these years, during which he practiced and honed his craft, is moving and revelatory. The dedication to excellence and innovation is formed at an astonishingly early age and never wavers or wanes. Martin illuminates the sacrifice, discipline, and originality that made him an icon and informs his work to this day. To be this good, to perform so frequently, was isolating and lonely. It took Martin decades to reconnect with his parents and sister, and he tells that story with great tenderness. Martin also paints a portrait of his times—the era of free love and protests against the war in Vietnam, the heady irreverence of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in the late sixties, and the transformative new voice of Saturday Night Live in the seventies. Throughout the text, Martin has placed photographs, many never seen before. Born Standing Up is a superb testament to the sheer tenacity, focus, and daring of one of the greatest and most iconoclastic comedians of all time.Book Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life Review :
There are few people out there who have not heard of Steve Martin. Many know him from his famous movies or appearances on Saturday Night Live. Born Standing up is the story of Martin’s previous life as a standup comedian. He tells the story of growing up working at magic shops, performing skits at empty bars, and running out of money not once, but several times.I leave a 3-star review mainly because I felt that I was left with a lot of unanswered questions. The book is quite short for a memoir and at the end, I felt that I was just getting started. Martin tells the story of his childhood and the early years of his standup career well, but I personally feel like this book is an unfinished product. It felt as if there were intentions to write a comprehensive memoir at some point, but the publishing deadline arrived and the book was shipped as is.Despite my critical review, I would say the book is fully worth the read. It is one of those books you have to sit down and digest all at once and enjoy entering the mind of the man who invented an entirely new version of standup comedy. Needing a break from suspense and dystopian thrillers, I turned to this memoir by Steve Martin whose career I have followed through all its many turns. Who didn’t love the wild and crazy guy in the white suit and the arrow through his head? Who didn’t look forward to his visits on Johnny Carson and his skits on SNL? I enjoyed his movies from the offbeat humor of The Jerk to the poignant nostalgia of Pennies From Heaven and began to sense the range of his intellect. When I dipped into his writing I was even more taken by the depth of talent. This book shows us the forces that made Steve Martin a popular stand up comic. It ends when he leaves that field and only hints at what is to come. I can’t remember the last book I read in which I began reading the last chapter and realized I was reaching the conclusion and was still hungry for more.It was fascinating to read how Martin came to be a comic, how he honed his skill and how he persevered. Without bragging, he comes across as determined, bright, and honorable. There are no snarky celebrity revelations. Instead he acknowledges the contributions others made in his career. The best part, however, was the story of the uneasy relationship with his father. Although Steve Martin writes from the perspective of a successful performer, this complex story seems to be part of the lives of many people as they grow to adulthood. How Martin handled it is a testament to his underlying decency. If you are looking for a respite during challenging times, you will find Steve Martin’s story both entertaining and uplifting.
